A few days ago, we took a spontaneous family trip to Pakistan, our first visit in three years. Islamabad is a city that holds a special place in my heart. It is where my husband and I grew up and got married.
This trip was especially meaningful because it was the first time our almost two-year-old son would meet my parents, siblings, and their children. It was also the occasion of my husband’s younger brother’s Nikkah, the paper marriage signing ceremony.
Celebrations, Reunions, and Family Joy
Our visit was all about family reunions and cultural celebrations. We were not sure how our children would react to the new experiences.
The days began with preparations for the Nikkah, getting our outfits ready, organizing Bid and Mithai boxes. The days ended with all of us dressed in beautiful desi attire, fully immersed in the joy and warmth of family.
Food, Culture, and Shared Memories
The food was a highlight for both adults and kids. Gulab Jamuns, Barfi, Samosas, Jalebi, Naan, Parathas, Nihari, Biryani, and Paye were all enjoyed.
Our children loved the sweet treats and savory specialties. They soaked in the love and attention from family and friends. Sharing meals created lasting family memories and reinforced our cultural roots.
Kids Connecting with Heritage
One of my biggest fears before the trip was how my children would connect with their heritage. By the end of the visit, all those fears were gone.
They loved Pakistan just as much as we do. Driving through Islamabad and showing them nostalgic places from our childhood created memories I will cherish forever.
On our way home to Switzerland, my daughter suddenly said she wanted to visit Nano, my mother. That simple statement made me realize that our connection to Pakistan and our culture is being preserved in our children’s hearts.
Final Thoughts: Home Is a Feeling
This short trip reminded me that home is not just a place, but a feeling, a connection to culture, family, and love. I look forward to the next visit, continuing to build memories together and sharing our heritage with our children.
